- Service records. Regular oil and fuel filter changes matter more on a diesel than on a gas engine.
- Emissions system. On 2010 and newer trucks, confirm the DPF, EGR and DEF systems work and have not been removed or modified. Deleted emissions systems are illegal and can make a truck hard to insure and resell.
- Turbo and injectors. Listen for whining or whistling, and watch for heavy smoke on start-up or under load.
- Towing wear. Check the hitch, rear suspension and transmission fluid condition for signs of heavy use.
- Winter readiness. Confirm the block heater works and that the truck starts cleanly on a cold morning.
